Sangamon County Jail Overview

The jail opened in October 1991 after nearly four years of planning and construction. It uses a podular indirect-supervision design, with direct supervision in four major cellblocks. The 2022 count was above rated capacity, while the 2023 and 2024 counts were below the 314-bed figure.

Sangamon Jail Visitation Rules

Sangamon County Jail visitation is video-based for normal adult jail visits. On-site video visits are free, monitored, and limited by the weekly visit count listed by the sheriff. Off-site video visits use HomeWAV and may carry provider charges. Visitors need photo identification that includes date of birth, and no cell phones, coats, purses, or bags are allowed in the visitation area. Sangamon Jail Mail and Money

Personal mail for Sangamon County Jail uses TextBehind. The current Corrections page says electronic letters can be sent through TextBehind, while handwritten mail is sent to Phoenix, Maryland, photocopied, and forwarded for jail kiosk delivery. Legal mail is different. Attorney legal documentation must be sent through USPS or checked in directly with Jail Administration. Commissary can include snacks, stationery, undergarments, games, and extra hygiene or grooming supplies. When a person moves from pre-arraignment status to general-population bedding, the jail issues facility clothing and a hygiene kit with a toothbrush, toothpaste, comb, and washcloth.

Illinois pretrial release law changed the old cash-bail model. Article 110 of the Illinois Code of Criminal Procedure now governs release conditions and detention after arrest.
